THE HEART ASKS PLEASURE – FIRST –
AND THEN – EXCUSE FROM PAIN –
AND THEN – THOSE LITTLE ANODYNES
THAT DEADEN SUFFERING-
AND THEN – TO GO TO SLEEP –
AND THEN – IF IT SHOULD BE
THE WILL OF ITS INQUISITOR
THE LIBERTY TO DIE –
BY EMILY DICKINSON, “THE HEART ASKS PLEASURE – FIRST”

Am fascinated
It amazes
How it works
What it does
Without it what happens
The heart
The human heart is a muscular organ about the size of a fist, located just behind and slightly left of the breastbone. It pumps blood through the network of arteries and veins called the cardiovascular system. The heart supplies oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and remove carbon dioxide and other wastes to make the organ and the tissue active.
The heart weighs between about 10 to 12 ounce (280 to 340 grams) in men and 8 to 10 ounces (230 to 280 grams) in women. The heart beats about 100,000 times per day (about 3billion beats in a lifetime). See how fascinating it is. An adult heart beats about 60 to 80 times per minute. Newborn’s heart beats faster than adult hearts, about 70 to 190 beats per minute. The heart pumps about 6 quarters (5.7 liters) of blood through the body.
It amazes to know that not all animals have heart eg. starfish and even corals. Some animals have three hearts eg. Octopuses and squids while others have seven hearts.
Without the heart what happens to the body?
When some part of the heart does not function properly what happens to the body?
The heart controls all the part of the body and essential to keep humans alive. There are some parts of the body when chopped off the body still function while there are others when chopped you die instantly. For this reason, the heart is very essential to the life of every man. Though scientists have produced artificial heart, it has limits and can’t be compared to the natural heart. They still need the natural heart to transplant for the patient to work actively.
When the heart does not function properly the body faces such effects as:
Coronary artery disease narrows the arteries and block supply of blood causes heart attack
Stable angina pectoris narrow coronary arteries cause predictable chest pain discomfort exertion
Unstable angina pectoris chest pain or discomfort that is new, worsening or occurs at rest.
Congestive heart failure the heart too weak or too stiff to effectively pump blood through the body. Shortness of breath and leg swelling are common symptoms.
To mention a few. In United states, heart disease is the leading cause of death. One person dies every 36 seconds from cardiovascular disease. About 655,000 Americans die from heart disease each year- that is 1 in ever four deaths. (reference: HEART DISEASE FACT cdc.gov)
From the WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION(WHO), Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number 1 cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9million lives each year and one third death occur prematurely in people who are under 70.
All scientists are able to give us is the physical and experimented aspect of the organ but there is more to it than all they saw.
God is the creator and we, including plants, animals, sea, sun, moon and stars are HIS creatures. The bible saying man is a replica (photocopy, duplicate, resemblance) of GOD means when I see man I see GOD. Then if we are GOD’s resemblance then I can say with confidence that GOD has a heart – Genesis 6:6, Genesis 8:21. Since He has it and created us with it, He knows how it works? Why the heart? And how important is it to HIM? So let’s ask the creator…………
Do you know that the bible speaks about the heart? The heart is mentioned 830 times, 725 times in the old testament and 105 times in the new testament of King James Version of the bible. This shows that there is more to learn about the heart. (from the Christian bible reference site)
The bible uses the word “heart” primarily to refer to the ruling center of the whole person, the spring of all desires. So I second with EMILY DICKINSON in her poem “THE HEART ASKS PLEASURE –FIRST“- (Reference interestingliterature.com). The heart is seen as the seat of the will, intellect and feel-ings.
The heart is the center not only of spiritual activity but also operate the human life. The heart is the home of the personal life, seat of the conscience (Romans 2:15), naturally evil (Genesis 8:21) and hence can contaminate the whole life and character (Matthew 12:34; 15:18, Eccl 8:11; psalm 73:7)

Do u know the heart has qualities. Some are
The heart speaks (Genesis 17:17, Gen 24:45)
The heart desires (Genesis 27:41,)
The heart is Sinful and wicked (2 chronicles 25:19, proverb 21:4, Ezekiel 14:4,7, 1kings 11:3,4,9, psalm 73:21, 81:12,95:10, acts 7:39, Jeremiah 17:9, proverbs 14:14)
The heart is good (psalm 51:10, 17, Deuteronomy 5:29, 2 kings22:19, 2 chronicles34:27, proverbs 15:13, 17:22,14:30, psalm 32:11, 1 Samuel 13:14, Philippians 2:22)
Heart of grief, sorrows and pain
With these verses shows the heart is capable of varying degrees of strength, commitment or intensity. If our heart is not important why would GOD seek our heart? Why does he want us to return to him with all our heart? Joel 2:12-17 and revelation 2:4. Give Him our heart? Proverb 23:26. God seeks our heart for through it flows the spring of life so He commands us to watch over it (proverbs 4:23). FOR WE ARE HIS, THE SHEEP OF HIS PASTURE.
The Reflection
Reflection means the change in direction of a wavefront at an interface between two different media so that the wavefront returns into a medium from which it originated. Common examples include the reflection of light, sound and water waves. Wikipedia or Merriam- Webster define reflection as the image produced by a mirror or an opinion formed or a remark made after careful thought.
The reflection of man
Proverbs 27:19
As in water face answereth the face, so the heart of the man to man

Proverbs 23: 7
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

Matthew 12:34
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Proverbs 10:11
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence

Proverb21:2
All deeds are right in the sight of the doer, but the LORD weighs the heart
Ezekiel 11:21
But as for those whose heart goes after detestable things and their abominations, I bring their deeds upon their own heads, says the lord GOD.

Ezekiel 16:30
How sick is your heart, says the lord God, that you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen whore;

Luke 6:24
The good person out of the treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.

The heart is the reflection of man
To my understanding, there are things that reflect our image like when we look into the mirror we see a duplicate or another image of ourselves so our hearts reflect our body. If you want to know how good or bad your heart is look and examine your heart. What we keep or conceive in the heart has greater influence on us. Our heart works its schemes, our minds process it then our mouths speak. For our mind not to forget our hearts must store the information (proverb 3:1). For my body to be sound my heart must be sound, only God can clean our heart.
So I second with John Donne when he wrote
BATTER MY HEART, THREE-PERSON’D GOD, FOR YOU
AS YET BUT KNOCK, BREATHE, SHINE, AND SEEK TO MEND;
THAT I MAY RISE AND STAND, O’ERTHROW ME AND BEND
YOUR FORCE TO BREAK, BLOW, BURN, AND MAKE ME NEW.
I, LIKE AN USURP’D TOWN TO ANOTHER DUE,
LABOUR TO ADMIT YOU, BUT OH, TO ON END;
REASON, YOUR VICEROY IN ME, ME SHOULD DEFEND,
BUT IS CAPTIV’D, AND PROVES WEAK OR UNTRUE.
YET DEARLY I LOVE YOU, AND WOULD BE LOV’D FAIN,
BUT AM BETROTH’D UNTO YOUR ENERMY;
DIVORCE ME, UNTIE OR BREAK THAT KNOT AGAIN,
TAKE ME TO YOU, IMPRISON ME, FOR I,
EXCEPT YOU ENTHRALL ME, NEVER SHALL BE FREE,
NOR EVER CHASTE, EXCEPT YOU RAVISH ME.

As humans existing on earth, our survival and sufficiency depend on our creator who knows and has our best of interest (psalm 23). We can do nothing without GOD. For HIS banner over us is love and HIS heart beat day and night for us. Nothing can separate us from HIS love.
TAKE MY HEART LORD LET IT BE

There are so many songs composed to represent the heart of man or love both in the circular and in the gospel industry. Books, poems, articles, quotes etc that talk about the heart in so many ways. The heart shape is an ideograph used to express the idea of the ‘heart’ in its metaphorical or symbolic sense as the center of emotion, including affection and love, especially romantic love.

In conclusion the heart is a phenomenon (remarkable, marvel, sensation and fascinating) organ of the body that controls the whole man. It does more than the pumping of blood and removal of toxic or waste from the body but also take decisions, love, hope, greed (covetous, envy and jealous), be in pain (grief), device evil towards its neighbors and kills which reflects in all man does. Doctors caution patients as science caution us to take care of our heart because it is important for without the heart man can’t function so GOD cautions man about what we store and produce in there for the heart is a fountain of life.
Don’t keep anger, revenge and pain in your heart because it will never make you happy or have peace of heart, mind and the body can’t flourish (cardiovascular disease). God want to dwell in us and help us make the right decision pertaining to life and godliness. For things in the heart makes a man.
